Sharing the Brandy Sponsored Walk
- 9:30 am - 5:00 pm
We are delighted to warmly invite you to ‘Share the Brandy’ – our annual charity fundraiser organised in loving memory of Neil, Val, Natalie and Lorna to raise money for Cancer Focus NI, and in particular to support the Family Support Service. This is a very special event that is about fun and laughter, making it a very fitting tribute to these four special people.
Sharing the brandy is a lovely walk up the Mourne Mountains, with spectacular scenery. There are 2 options for walkers to cater for a range of abilities, which are described below.
Route 1: A moderate walk from Trassey Track to Donard car park taking in sights such as Hares Gap, The Castles, Commedagh and the Glen River. Covering a distance of 7.5 miles and ascending to a height of 600m, this walk will take between 3-5 hours and requires a reasonable degree of fitness to complete. The biggest ascent, however, is within the first 3 miles at which point the option to return to Trassey would be available. Although this walk does not summit any peaks it is still prone to the weather and mist so suitable warm clothing and footwear should be worn.
Route 2: A similar route to route 1 with the added ascent of Slieve Donard. The route is approximately 9 miles with an ascent of 850m and may take between 5-7 hours. It requires a good level of fitness to complete. Weather conditions along the route and at the summit can be very variable, but wind and mist are common if not normal so suitable clothing, footwear and nutrition is essential. Both options follow the same route until the Saddle of Donard so walkers can switch to route 1 at any point.
The walk will take place on Saturday 12th August, with start times between 9.30 and 11.00 am, and will finish in Donard Car Park with a BBQ. If you would like to join us it is essential that you register below as soon as possible to ensure safety on the mountain.
This walk is primarily about sharing the laughing and the happy memories, but raising some money for a special cause along the way. The money will go towards the Neil McCance Forget-Me-Not Fund, set up by Cancer Focus to help fund the Family Support Service, which offers invaluable support to enable children to cope with the challenges of a parent living and dying with cancer. Donations can be made using the Sharing the Brandy 2017 BT My Donate page or you can simply give a small donation on the day.
We really hope you can join us and when you register we will be in touch with further information closer to the event.
