Breast cancer

1 in 8 women in Northern Ireland will get breast cancer in their lifetime.

Around 1,400 women in Northern Ireland are diagnosed with Breast cancer every year. That’s a huge number. It could be your mum, sister, grandmother, friend, classmate, or colleague.

So whatever your age or sex, being breast aware – knowing what is normal for you – makes sense.

1. Get to know what is normal for you

2. Check your breasts regularly

3. Know what changes to look for

4. If in doubt, get checked out

5. Go for breast screening when you’re 50 or over

“The date of my diagnosis is one that I will never forget. I had just spent two years growing my hair and had had breast augmentation. Then there I was being told by an Oncologist that I had a HER2 positive tumour in my right breast and in lymph nodes in my right arm. I was in an absolute state of shock when they detailed that my treatment would involve immediate chemotherapy, followed by a lumpectomy, radiotherapy, and a year of Herceptin injections.”
