Northern Ireland Cancer Charity Launch New Ireland-Wide Trekking Challenge to Conquer Three Peaks in Ireland

Cancer Focus Northern Ireland is delighted to announce a new event taking place on the 23rd – 25th August. A perfectly planned adventure for the ultimate climbing enthusiast. The Big 3: Irish Mountain Trek is one for the bucket list as lucky trekkers are guided up to the towering peaks of Carrauntoohil in Munster, Lugnaquilla in Leinster, and Slieve Donard in Ulster, all in the span of one unforgettable weekend. Known as some of the best hiking locations in Ireland, this curated list of mountains are world-renowned with locals and tourists travelling from near and far to explore the beauty that awaits at the summit.

If it sounds tough, it is. The local cancer charity is calling on experienced hikers who consider themselves to be comfortable walking in mountainous terrain to join them and sign up for one of the very limited spaces available on this exciting trek.

The Big 3: Irish Mountain Trek promises to be a rewarding challenge in every sense of the word. The stunning vistas and euphoric ascent to each peak is only part of the accomplishment each trekker will feel when they reach the final summit. The total fundraised by each climber will make a lasting impact in the lives of local people and families who are dealing with a devastating cancer diagnosis.

James Barbour, Outdoor Events Manager for Cancer Focus Northern Ireland said:

“We are absolutely delighted to be bringing this brand-new event to all of our supporters who are passionate about the outdoors and ready for their next big challenge. It is set to be a 2024 highlight for any serious mountain hiker, so if you think you have what it takes and want to raise vital funds for your local cancer charity, join us and help to continue to provide support to the 1 in 2 people who will be diagnosed with cancer in Northern Ireland each year.”

Participants will start their journey from Newcastle, County Down where a private coach will transport them to their first challenge, Carrauntoonhil, Kerry- the highest peak in Ireland and arguably one of the most scenic. Setting the weekend off on a ‘high’ the journey will continue to Lugnaquilla, Wicklow and finish on the summit of Slieve Donard, Newcastle. Transport, hotels, mountain guides and medals are all included in the challenge, so trekkers can concentrate all their energy on preparing for the climb and fundraising. A bespoke fundraising pack full of ideas, tips and tricks to maximise fundraising efforts will be given to all participants, along with ongoing support from a Cancer Focus NI events team member who will be championing the climbers along the way and offering constant support.

Cancer Focus NI provides a number of vital support services to help local people and their families affected by cancer. These services include counselling, family support, specialist bra fitting, art therapy and a patient driving service.  The charity offers a range of health improvement services including the Keeping Well vans, stop smoking service, schools’ programmes and skin cancer prevention work, and also funds local pioneering research.
